Sahrawi President Meets with UNSG Personal Envoy for Western Sahara

Sahrawi President and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, welcomed Staffan De Mistura, the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, on Thursday evening during his visit to the Sahrawi region, as reported by the Sahrawi news agency SPS.
The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Sahrawi Republic’s presidency. It was attended by Mohamed Sidi Omar, the Polisario Front representative to the UN and coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), as well as Nanna Labat Rachid, the presidential advisor for information and the Arab world, along with De Mistura’s aides, according to SPS.
Earlier, the Italian-Swedish diplomat held a working session with Sahrawi leaders at the Chahid El Hafed refugee camp. During these discussions, the Sahrawi leadership reiterated their position, which is firmly rooted in the principle of enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination as guaranteed by international laws and charters.
As part of his visit, the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy also toured various institutions belonging to the Sahrawi Republic, including the headquarters of the Sahrawi Red Crescent.
De Mistura’s visit is part of preparations for his briefing to the Security Council scheduled for October 16 and aims to enhance his engagement with both the Polisario Front and the Moroccan occupying state.
