Putin Announces Unilateral Ceasefire in Ukraine Ahead of Victory Day Celebrations

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday declared a unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine, coinciding with preparations to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
According to a Kremlin statement, Putin ordered a halt to all military operations in Ukraine from midnight on May 7–8 until midnight on May 10–11. Moscow called on Ukraine to observe the same ceasefire, warning that any violations would meet with “an adequate and effective response.”
The Kremlin reiterated Russia’s readiness to engage in peace talks without preconditions, emphasizing its aim to address the root causes of the conflict and to work constructively with international partners. As of now, Ukraine has not issued an official response to the ceasefire announcement.
