Phanuel Habimana, the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Algeria, expressed his satisfaction on Thursday regarding Algeria’s strategic position within the African pharmaceutical industry. He noted that Algeria ranks among the top countries on the continent for fulfilling its local medication needs, according to a statement from the Ministry of Pharmaceutical Industry.

During a meeting held at the ministry’s headquarters with Minister Ouacim Kouidri and a significant delegation from the WHO, both parties discussed Algeria’s capabilities and resources in the pharmaceutical sector. They focused particularly on drug production, various medical devices, and the medication registration system, as detailed in the statement.

In this context, Habimana affirmed that “Algeria occupies a strategic role in the pharmaceutical industry, enabling it to rank among the leading African nations in meeting local medication requirements.”

To maintain this status and increase the share of Algerian exports of pharmaceutical products and medical devices, the WHO representative emphasized the necessity of revitalizing the collaborative project between the organization and the National Agency for Pharmaceutical Products, as clarified in the statement.

Habimana also extended a special invitation to Algeria to participate in the WHO global forum aimed at pharmaceutical-producing countries.

Additionally, the minister commended the growth of the pharmaceutical sector in Algeria, noting that by the end of the year, the country will begin producing raw materials for anticancer medications. He also highlighted that opportunities for partnership and investment in the pharmaceutical industry remain available in Algeria, as concluded in the statement.
