Paralympic Games: Algerian Hocine Bettir Wins Bronze in Powerlifting

Algerian athlete Hocine Bettir clinched the bronze medal in para-powerlifting (65 kg) at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, successfully lifting 209 kg on his third attempt during the finals held on Thursday at La Chapelle Arena.

Representing AS Emir Abdelkader (Mascara), this accomplishment marks Bettir’s second bronze medal at the Paralympics, following his success in Tokyo in 2021.

The gold medal in this category was awarded to China’s Zou Yi, who lifted 215 kg, while British competitor Mark Swan secured the silver with a lift of 213 kg.

On the seventh day of competition at the 2024 Paralympic Games, Algerian athletes shone brightly, bringing home a total of three gold medals: Athmani Skander Djamil in the 400 m (T13), Safia Djelal in seated shot put (F57), and Abdelkader Bouamer in para-judo (-60 kg – J1). They also earned three bronze medals from Nassima Saifi in seated shot put (F57), Ishak Ouldkouider in para-judo (-60 kg – J2), and Hocine Bettir in para-powerlifting (65 kg).

With a total of ten medals (5 gold and 5 bronze), Algeria currently ranks 19th in the overall medal standings. Other medals awarded to Algerian competitors at the 2024 Paralympics include gold for Athmani Skander Djamil in the 100 meters (T13), gold for Nassima Saïfi in discus throw (F57), bronze for Ahmed Mehideb in club throw (F32), and bronze for Lynda Hamri in the women’s long jump (T12).
