ALGIERS, Feb 17, 2026 – The President of the Republic of Niger, Head of State, General of the Army Abdourahamane Tiani, concluded on Tuesday a fraternity and working visit to Algeria, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Upon his departure from Algiers International Airport, he was seen off by the President of the Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, and members of the government.
This visit provided an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of fraternity, friendship and good neighborliness between the two brotherly countries, within the framework of a shared political will to elevate bilateral cooperation in various fields, in the mutual interest of the Algerian and Nigerien peoples.
In a joint statement delivered with the President of the Republic of Niger at the conclusion of their talks at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized that “through this visit, we are putting an end to an unusual period marked by a certain coolness between the two countries, although the two brotherly peoples maintained contact.”
He added that “this visit has strengthened the bonds of fraternity and friendship between us, as neighbors, brothers and friends,” and that “we have reached agreement on all matters relating to our security and energy cooperation, including hydrocarbons and electricity, as well as our cooperation in the fields of vocational training, military training and university education.”
In this regard, the President of the Republic announced that “it has been agreed to launch the project for the construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline across Nigerien territory after the holy month of Ramadan,” specifying that “the national company Sonatrach will take charge and begin installation of the pipeline crossing Niger.”
On the security front, the President of the Republic stated that the two countries are “in the same trench,” reaffirming that “the security of Niger is inseparable from that of Algeria.”
For his part, the President of Niger praised “the highest Algerian authorities who, despite the futile attempts of certain powers with neo-colonialist overtones and international and sub-regional organizations, remote-controlled and manipulated, showed solidarity with the Nigerien people following the events of July 26, 2023.”
He added that his presence in Algeria illustrates “the interest that Niger attaches to fraternity and bilateral cooperation” between the two peoples and governments.
In a joint communiqué issued at the conclusion of the visit, the two parties reaffirmed “their shared determination to preserve the exemplary nature of their relations and to jointly confront regional challenges.”
Algeria and Niger also reaffirmed “their attachment to the founding principles of their relations, namely respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each State, non-interference in internal affairs, and effective solidarity in the face of common threats.”
Furthermore, the two countries expressed their “conviction that the future of the Sahel will be built by the countries of the region themselves, through local and inclusive solutions.”
