Mpox: India reports a suspected case of infection

India has detected a suspected case of mpox in a man who recently travelled from an African country, the Indian health ministry announced on Sunday.

“The case is being managed in line with established protocols, and contact tracing is ongoing to identify potential sources and assess the impact within the country,” the ministry said.

“The country is fully prepared to deal with such isolated, travel-related case and has robust measures in place to manage and mitigate any potential risk,” added the same source.

The ministry did not specify which strain of the mpox virus the patient might have, but tests were being conducted to confirm the infection.

India had previously detected 30 cases of clade 2 variant between 2022 and March 2024.
