Massive Fire Engulfs Southwest Japan Neighborhood, Damages Over 170 Buildings, One Missing

A massive fire swept through a neighborhood in southwestern Japan, leaving more than 170 buildings damaged, local media reported on Wednesday. The blaze began late Tuesday in a densely populated residential area in the city of Oita, quickly spreading through closely built wooden structures, according to the Kyodo news agency.

Authorities evacuated over 170 residents as firefighters worked through the night to contain the flames. One person has been reported missing, raising concerns as rescue teams continue searching the affected area. The scale of destruction has prompted local officials to coordinate additional emergency support for displaced families.

Firefighting crews remain on the scene, battling lingering hotspots and working to prevent the fire from reigniting. The cause of the blaze has not yet been determined, and an investigation is expected once the situation is fully under control.
