The Algerian Secretary of State for African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bakhta Selma Mansouri, attended a meeting of the African Union’s (AU) High-Level Ad Hoc Committee on South Sudan (C5) held in Juba. The purpose of the meeting was to monitor the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement and to strengthen coordination with regional and international partners to promote stability, achieve peace, and ensure sustainable development in the country, as stated in a communiqué from the ministry on Friday.

The meeting also included high-level participation from representatives of various organizations and key partners, such as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC), and ambassadors from African countries accredited to South Sudan.

In this context, C5 members met with Riek Machar, the First Vice President of South Sudan, to discuss the challenges obstructing the implementation of the peace agreement and the need to enhance cooperation among the different parties to overcome obstacles, expedite the peace process, and ensure security and stability in the country, the source noted.

In her remarks, Mansouri stressed “the importance of effective and comprehensive implementation of the revitalized peace agreement as a crucial factor for achieving stability and national reconciliation in South Sudan.” She underscored the necessity “to activate the clauses of the agreement, which are essential steps towards reinforcing durable peace and creating favorable conditions for sustainable development and improving the living standards of the people of South Sudan,” the document concluded.
