Malawi Reports 62 Cases of Mpox Since April

As of July 31, Malawi has confirmed a total of 62 cases of mpox, with the first case identified in April, according to local media reports.

Wezzie Kamanga Kachitsa, a specialist at Kamuzu Central Hospital—the country’s primary healthcare facility located in the capital city of Lilongwe—stated that the majority of patients have recovered.

Ms. Kachitsa noted that 15 patients are still undergoing treatment, and there have been no reported deaths attributed to the disease since the outbreak began in Malawi.

Health authorities are actively addressing the epidemic through awareness and prevention campaigns, as well as management efforts for those affected, she added.

“There are numerous resources mobilized to tackle these cases, ensuring that facilities are adequately prepared to handle the illness,” she remarked.

Mpox is a rare viral disease transmitted through bodily fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated objects. Common symptoms include fever, itching, and swollen lymph nodes.
