Von der Leyen : Trump’s Tariffs Deal a Major Blow to Global Economy

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned on Thursday that US President Donald Trump’s newly announced reciprocal tariffs on nations worldwide would severely harm the global economy. Speaking at a news conference, she described the move as a “major blow” that would increase uncertainty, fuel protectionism, and lead to higher inflation, affecting vulnerable populations the most.

While acknowledging concerns over unfair trade practices, von der Leyen criticized Trump’s reliance on tariffs as the primary solution, emphasizing that negotiation and cooperation are necessary to reform global trade. She stated that the EU is prepared to respond with countermeasures, particularly in response to tariffs on steel, and remains committed to protecting its interests while seeking dialogue to prevent further economic instability.
