Japanese atomic bomb survivors to receive Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded on Tuesday to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese survivor group of the atomic bomb that advocates against nuclear weapons. This recognition marks the 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The award will be accepted shortly after 1:00 PM local time at Oslo City Hall by the three co-chairs of the association, which is dedicated to promoting a world free from these weapons.

The American bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, resulted in approximately 214,000 deaths and played a significant role in hastening the end of World War II.

Nobel Prizes in other categories, including literature, chemistry, medicine, physics, and economics, will also be presented later in the day in Stockholm, with the presence of Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf.
