ICC : The international community must pay more attention to the atrocities in Sudan

NEW YORK (United Nations) – The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, spoke on Monday evening before the Security Council, where he called on the international community to consider the calamity unfolding in Darfur, Sudan.

“Since the previous briefing six months ago, the situation has only gotten worse.” The prosecutor said he was “particularly concerned about the violations against children and the gender-based violence, including rape,” said Khan before the Council.

The ICC prosecutor noted that his office is currently preparing to process arrest warrants in line with the evidence adduced.

According to him, today’s crisis echoes the tragedy that occurred in Darfur back in 2003. “Let us remember that following the fighting and atrocities, around 300,000 people were killed and millions were forced to flee their homes,” he recalled.

“The lack of attention from the international community to the ongoings in Darfur could lead to an increasing scale of crimes,” he added.

“The feeling of impunity among the complicits in the events of El Geneina, or more recently of El Fasher, is motivated by a deep belief that we’re indifferent. We are not,” stressed the prosecutor. “This is an opportunity to make change,” he concluded.
