Guterres Reaffirms Two-State Solution as Basis for Peace in Palestine at BRICS Summit

NEW YORK – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated that lasting peace in Palestine must be built on the foundation of the two-state solution. Speaking at the BRICS summit in Brazil, he emphasized that achieving peace starts with an immediate and sustained ceasefire in Gaza.

Guterres also called for the free and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid and a halt to the ongoing annexation and violence in the occupied West Bank. He warned that without these urgent steps, prospects for peace will continue to deteriorate.

Turning to global security challenges, the UN chief voiced deep concern over the weaponization of artificial intelligence. He stressed the need for a multilateral approach to AI governance grounded in justice and human rights. “AI cannot be the preserve of a few,” Guterres said, adding that developing countries must have a meaningful role in shaping global AI policy to ensure its benefits are shared equitably.
