EU Provides €235 Million Aid Package for Syria and Neighboring Countries

The European Union (EU) is poised to provide €235 million in aid to Syria and its neighboring countries, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid Hadja Lahbib announced on Friday.
“I come here to announce a new package of humanitarian aid of 235 million euros ($242 million) in Syria and in neighboring countries,” Lahbib stated to reporters after her meeting with the transitional authorities in the country.
“Our funding will contribute to basic needs like shelter, food, clean water, sanitation, health care, education and emergencies among others,” she explained.
In response to questions about the potential lifting of international sanctions—an ongoing request from the new Syrian government—Lahbib assured that this issue would be included on the agenda for the upcoming EU Foreign Ministers’ Council in Brussels on January 27.
