EU commission chief vows tougher sanctions on Russia if ceasefire breached

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Saturday backed a proposed unconditional 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, saying the EU was ready to impose more sanctions on Russia if a ceasefire is breached.

“The ball is now in Russia’s court,” von der Leyen wrote on social media platform X.

“We stand ready to maintain strong pressure on Russia and impose further biting sanctions in the event of a breach of a ceasefire,” she said.

In parallel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the visiting leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Poland held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump and discussed the full unconditional ceasefire on land, air and at sea for at least 30 days starting on Monday, the Ukrainian foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, said in a statement on X, describing the call as “productive”.
