De Villepin: Great anticipation in France and hope for resolving the crisis with Algeria

Former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said that “there is significant anticipation and hope within French circles for finding solutions to the crisis with Algeria.”

In an interview with AL24News channel, de Villepin shared, “Based on my meetings with numerous officials in France, both in political and economic sectors, I can say that there is great anticipation and hope for reaching solutions.”

“I know that both sides are prepared to do their part, and we are all ready to work towards overcoming the current disagreements and reopening channels of dialogue and cooperation,” he added.

De Villepin confirmed that efforts are underway to resolve the “current crisis in a positive way,” saying, “I would argue that things are heading in the right direction, and therefore, we must all work together to resolve this crisis positively.”

While emphasising the need for continued efforts, de Villepin noted, “I don’t consider myself a mediator, but from my standpoint, I have carefully read President Tebboune’s interview. I see that there are movements in progress, and I would say they are heading in the right direction.”

In addition, he stressed that acknowledging the painful history is essential, saying, “It’s vital to refocus attention on recognising this tragic history, and this must, without a doubt, happen.”

De Villepin expressed optimism about positive changes taking place soon, which would pave the way for a new phase in Algeria-France relations.

“The most important thing is to focus on the future, on what must be done for our youth and our peoples. This motivates us to look ahead and address the difficult and painful issues with a constructive spirit,” he added.

De Villepin underscored that “goodwill must be the driving force behind our efforts. Therefore, I sincerely hope that we will soon make progress. I already see steps being taken in this direction, and I want to believe that soon we will be able to move forward together.”
