Czech ANO Party to Form Coalition with Eurosceptic Motorists and SPD Parties

The Czech Republic’s right-wing populist ANO party announced Wednesday that it will form a coalition government with two Eurosceptic parties, Motorists and Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD), with the agreement set to be signed on November 3, according to local media.

Radio Prague International reported that ANO leader Andrej Babis reached the deal with the two parties to establish a governing coalition. The three party leaders are expected to meet later Wednesday to discuss the distribution of key parliamentary roles and the coalition’s policy priorities.

The move comes after President Petr Pavel on Monday formally tasked Babis with negotiating the formation of a new government. The ANO leader is expected to present the coalition agreement and government agenda to the president later this week.

In the parliamentary elections held on October 3–4, Babis’ ANO party won about 34.7% of the vote, well ahead of the ruling center-right Spolu coalition, which received around 23.2%.
