CJEU rules EU-Morocco trade deals invalid in Western Sahara

On Friday, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled in favor of the Polisario Front by rejecting appeals filed by the Council and the European Commission. This decision upholds the annulment of agreements between Morocco and the European Union concerning the occupied territory of Western Sahara.
In September 2021, the CJEU annulled two agreements related to fishing and agriculture that linked Morocco with the EU, stating that they were concluded in violation of a 2016 CJEU ruling and without the consent of the Sahrawi people.
The European Council and Commission submitted an appeal to the CJEU in December of the same year.
In a statement to APS, Oubi Bouchraya Bachir, the representative of the Polisario Front in Switzerland and at the UN and international organizations in Geneva, emphasized that the CJEU’s decision marks “a significant victory” for the Sahrawi cause in its legal efforts to end the exploitation of the resources belonging to the Sahrawi people.
