Ceasefire in Gaza: Algeria Aims to Continue Mediation Efforts with International Support

ALGIERS, February 6, 2025 – Algeria has expressed optimism regarding the continuation of its mediation efforts, strengthened by broad international backing, to ensure the effective implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and to monitor compliance across all its clauses and dimensions. This was conveyed in a statement released Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs.
“With the launch of negotiations for the second phase aimed at consolidating the ceasefire specifically in the Gaza Strip and addressing the broader consequences of the ongoing conflict, Algeria hopes that the efforts of the mediation group will persist, supported widely at the international level, to guarantee the application of this agreement and oversee its full implementation,” the statement noted.
In this context, the communiqué emphasized that “Algeria categorically rejects any plans aimed at displacing or emptying Gaza of its indigenous populations as part of a broader scheme targeting the Palestinian national project at its core.”
“Algeria reiterates its strong belief that achieving lasting peace in the Middle East is intrinsically tied to ensuring the rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to establish an independent and sovereign state. This must be pursued in accordance with the internationally recognized principle of ‘two states,’ which provides a just, sustainable, and definitive resolution to the Arab-Israeli conflict,” the same source notes.
“Based on this principle, Algeria underscores the necessity of unifying Palestinian territories—from Gaza to the West Bank and occupied El Qods—to realize the Palestinian national project. It cautioned that attempts to erase the foundations of this project, fragment it, or liquidate it will only prolong the conflict, deepen the suffering of the Palestinian people, and exacerbate insecurity and instability throughout the region,” the statement concluded.
