CAF to Introduce Major Regulation Changes Following 2025 AFCON Fallout

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced significant reforms to match regulations and officiating protocols, aimed at strengthening the game’s integrity and reducing refereeing errors in continental competitions.
“These changes and improvements to the CAF Statutes and Regulations will also ensure that the incidents that took place during the 2025 AFCON final do not recur,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe during a press conference following a meeting of the Executive Committee.
He stated that CAF is collaborating with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to implement advanced training programs for referees across the continent, aimed at enhancing professionalism and the quality of officiating.
Motsepe further highlighted that the CAF Appeal Board is an independent judicial body presided over by a judge, noting that final jurisdiction regarding the events of the AFCON final now rests with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS/TAS), which is expected to deliver its ruling in the coming months.
