Algeria’s Security Council Mission Accomplished, Says Bendjama

Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Amar Bendjama, stated that Algeria has successfully fulfilled its mission on the Security Council.
He emphasized the international community’s responsibility to address global hotspots and prevent the escalation of conflicts through equitable, sustainable political solutions that uphold state sovereignty and the fundamental rights of peoples.
During a Security Council meeting held Monday evening on “threats to international peace and security,” Ambassador Bendjama emphasized: “Algeria is leaving the Security Council having done what it had to do and having fulfilled its duty.” On this occasion, he expressed his full support for the statement made by the Permanent Representative of Somalia to the UN, Abukar Dahir Osman, in which he condemned the recognition by the Zionist entity of the “Somaliland” region, describing it as a direct violation of the United Nations Charter, the fundamental principles of the African Union, and the cornerstones of international law regarding state sovereignty and territorial integrity. Bendjama also echoed Osman’s remarks regarding the critical situation in Palestine.
The diplomat reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to the unity of Somalia, stating unequivocally that “Somaliland is an integral part of the country.” Addressing his colleagues on the Council, as well as those set to join the body for the upcoming term, Algeria’s Permanent Representative noted that they “will bear a heavy responsibility” during their tenure. He called on them to “work together with perseverance and to consistently involve all members of the United Nations in the Council’s activities.” Bendjama clarified that his call was directed at both permanent and non-permanent members with the overarching goal of maintaining international peace and security.
He particularly highlighted the vital role that elected members play in achieving the objectives entrusted to the Security Council.
Ambassador Bendjama concluded by commending his colleagues in the “A3+” Group, particularly those from outside the African continent who, during their term of office, committed to “vigorously defending African countries within this Council.”
