Algerian football legend Rachid Mekhloufi to be laid to rest in Algiers

ALGIERS – The body of the late Rachid Mekhloufi, the iconic footballer and former member of the National Liberation Front (FLN) team, will be laid to rest this Sunday afternoon at El-Alia Cemetery in Algiers. Mekhloufi passed away on Friday at the age of 88 after a long battle with a terminal illness.

The deceased body arrived on Saturday night at Houari Boumediene International Airport, where the Minister of Mujahideen and Rights Holders, Laid Rebika, was present alongside the late footballer’s family, relatives, and friends.

Minister Rebika, on behalf of the President of Algeria, extended condolences to the widow, son, and family of the deceased, highlighting the President’s deep respect for national icons, including members of the FLN football team.

Minister Rebika also praised the late Mekhloufi and his teammates, who responded to the call of the National Liberation Front to form a football team that played an essential role as ambassadors for the national cause.

For his part, the late Mekhloufi’s son expressed heartfelt appreciation for the efforts of the Algerian authorities in bringing his father’s body back to Algeria.
