ALGIERS – Algerian Army General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), presided Wednesday in Algiers over the opening of an international seminar titled “Geopolitics of Terrorism in the Shadow of New Global Transformations,” according to a statement from the Ministry of National Defense (MDN).
Organized on May 7–8, 2025, at the Army’s National Circle in Beni Messous, the seminar falls within Algeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its counterterrorism strategy. It aims to address the persistent threat of terrorism affecting many parts of the world, the MDN said.
General Chanegriha opened the event in the presence of advisors to the Algerian President, government members, senior defense officials, commanders of various military branches, national and foreign professors and experts. In his keynote address, he underscored that Algeria was among the first nations to recognize the dangers of terrorism and that it overcame this threat thanks to the unwavering support of its people and institutions.
The General emphasized Algeria’s early awareness of the barbaric and extremist nature of terrorism, which threatened the foundations of the national state and its republican system. He reaffirmed that Algeria refuses any attempt to downplay its battle against terrorism, a battle it fought under the rule of law during times when hesitation and complicity prevailed in global forums.
Thanks to the unity of its people, army, and institutions, Algeria has not only defeated terrorism but has also developed a unique, multidimensional counterterrorism approach. This strategy, combining operational and preventive measures, now serves as a model for other countries confronting transnational and cross-border extremist threats.
The seminar’s sessions featured in-depth discussions and workshops focused on analyzing the geopolitical landscape of terrorism, identifying future threats, and outlining the core principles of Algeria’s counterterrorism strategy. Participants contributed ideas and proposals aimed at enhancing global efforts to combat all forms of terrorism and extremism.
