Algeria Reaffirms Support for Landlocked Developing Countries at UN Conference in Turkmenistan

OAZA, Turkmenistan — In his address at the 3rd United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, held under the theme “Driving Progress through Partnerships,” Algerian Secretary of State for National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, highlighted Algeria’s tangible efforts to support development in landlocked African nations.

Speaking during the conference’s general session, Chaib emphasized that Algeria, as a “transit country” under the relevant UN classification, plays a key developmental role through its involvement in major continental infrastructure projects. He cited examples such as the Trans-Saharan Highway, the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, and the trans-Saharan fiber optic backbone—all of which facilitate regional integration and connectivity.

Chaib further stressed the numerous obstacles that landlocked developing countries face, including limited infrastructure investment, weak technological transfer, scarce international financial resources, and the impacts of climate change. He argued that solutions lie in the effective implementation of this conference’s outcomes, along with those of the Fourth UN Conference on Financing for Development, held recently in Seville from June 30 to July 3, 2025.

He concluded by calling for continued reform of the international financial architecture and for a more inclusive, representative, fair, and effective global economic governance system to meet the specific challenges faced by landlocked developing nations.
