Algeria Reaffirms Commitment to Historical Justice Ahead of 8 May Massacres Anniversary

ALGIERS — The Algerian Minister of Mujahideen and Rights-holders, Laid Rebiga, affirmed that Algeria will remain committed to its legitimate and principled demand to address the Memory file with seriousness and responsibility.

In a statement to APS on the eve of the National Day of Memory, which coincides with the commemoration of the massacres of 8 May 1945, Rebiga said that the 80th anniversary commemoration comes “in a particular national and international context, marked by profound global changes, notably the rising challenges peoples face regarding historical justice and their rights to recognition of their memory.”

He reaffirmed that Algeria “will remain, regardless of circumstances, attached to its legitimate and principled demand to address the Memory file with seriousness and responsibility, away from circumstantial calculations and media maneuvers,” a treatment “based on truth, mutual respect and fidelity to the oath of the martyrs.”

In this regard, the minister noted that the decisions taken by the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, as well as his concern to preserve the memory of the martyrs, were part of the “national duty dictated by loyalty and fidelity to the sacrifices made by millions of martyrs,”
