ALGIERS- Algerian Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, chaired at the ministry’s headquarters, in the presence of Minister of the Knowledge Economy, Startups and Micro-Enterprises, Noureddine Ouadah, a meeting on “the importance of developing video games with a view to promoting Algerian culture and preserving tangible and intangible heritage” and on “means aimed at supporting the startups specialized in this field,” said the ministry in a Communiqué.

“This meeting, which was attended by officials from the central administration of both ministries, representatives of several start-ups, a representative of the National Office for Copyright and Related Rights (ONDA), the director of the National Center for Cinematography, as well as the commissioner of the International Comic Strip Festival of Algiers (Fibda), focused on “the role of video games as an effective means of transmitting and promoting Algerian culture.”

This field is “among the modern domains offering great opportunities to introduce new generations to Algeria’s cultural and artistic heritage,” the same source added.

The participants emphasized “the need to use these games to highlight cultural heritage through the design of games that combine entertainment and learning, and reflect Algerian identity in their content,” while highlighting the significant revenues generated by these cultural industries.

In this regard, Ballalou listened to a presentation on a sample of projects from start-ups specializing in video games design.

The interventions of these companies focused on proposing innovative solutions, including the design and development of video games including components of national heritage, which is likely to “strengthen Algeria’s position in the global video game market.”
