Algeria Joins First Session of Preparatory Committee for 7th Arab Parliament Conference

A delegation from the Algerian Parliament attended the inaugural session of the preparatory committee for the 7th Arab Parliament Conference and the Assembly of Heads of Arab Councils and Parliaments, held on Wednesday in Cairo, according to a statement from the Council of the Nation.

“At the direction of Mr. Salah Goudjil, President of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Saâd Arrous, a member of the Council of the Nation and head of the presidential third parliamentary group, alongside Mr. Lazreg Betahar, also a member of the Council of the Nation and head of the independent parliamentary group, as well as Mr. Youcef Rehamnia, a member of the National People’s Assembly and representative of the Arab Parliament, participated in this first session to discuss the draft conference document titled ‘An Arab Parliamentary Vision for Achieving and Strengthening Peaceful Coexistence’ on February 19, 2025, in Cairo,” the source reported.

The meeting was opened by Mohamed Ahmed Al-Yamahi, President of the Arab Parliament, with representatives from various Arab councils and parliaments in attendance.

During the discussions, representatives from the Arab parliaments “unanimously emphasized that addressing the draft document on achieving and strengthening peaceful coexistence was not a priority in the current context, particularly considering recent developments concerning the Palestinian issue,” the statement noted.

They proposed to “postpone this discussion while highlighting the importance of adopting a unified stance against any forced or voluntary displacement of Palestinians from their land, especially in light of discussions surrounding the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza.”

The assembled parliamentarians “insisted on the necessity of adopting a resolution that rejects the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and developing an action plan aimed at mobilizing Arab support for the resilience of Palestinians in their homeland, which will be presented to the heads of Arab councils and parliaments during their upcoming meeting scheduled for Saturday, February 22.”

As a result, the participants “discussed an Arab parliamentary action plan to reject displacement and land annexation policies, support the resistance of the Palestinian people on their land, and thwart plans intended to dismantle the Palestinian issue,” the source further stated.

In his remarks, Saâd Arrous, representing the Algerian parliamentary delegation, “commended the initiative to convene a conference unifying the Arab Parliament and the Arab Parliamentary Union, reaffirming the Arab rejection of any form of forced or voluntary displacement of Palestinians.”

He suggested, in this regard, “the establishment of a joint committee between the Arab Parliament and the Arab Parliamentary Union to oversee the implementation of the outcomes from this conference,” the statement concluded.
