Algeria Explores Local Production of LFP Batteries in Talks with Algerian Expert Karim Zaghib

ALGIERS- Algerian Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy, in charge of Mines, Karima Tafer, held a meeting on Tuesday in Montreal (Canada) with the Algerian expert Karim Zaghib, during which they discussed the implementation in Algeria of “LFP” battery projects, made up of the lithium-iron-phosphate trio, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energy.
This meeting with Professor Zaghib, one of the world’s leading experts in the field of energy and storage technologies, took place on the sidelines of Tafer’s participation in the “CIM CONNECT” Convention and Exhibition, in the presence of members of the Algerian delegation.
On this occasion, Professor Zaghib presented the advantages of LFP battery technology, describing it as a “promising” technology in terms of safety, durability, thermal performance, and cost.
He further highlighted the significant potential offered by Algeria, thanks to its rich mineral resources and its geostrategic position, which make it a strong candidate to host pioneering industrial projects in this field.
For her part, Tafer reiterated “Algeria’s commitment to developing the value chain related to strategic minerals, particularly lithium, phosphate, and iron.”
Integrating energy storage technologies into the national industrial system is “a fundamental step towards achieving energy transition and developing a clean, value-added national industry,” she stressed.
This meeting allowed for an exchange on the practical aspects of scientific and technical cooperation, particularly training and field research, for the installation of future LFP battery production units in Algeria, “in line with the country’s aspirations to become a major regional player in clean energy and green technologies.”
