Algeria: Evacuation of Turkish Sailor Suffering from Cardiac Arrest

On Wednesday, Algerian coast guard units under the Naval Forces Command conducted an emergency evacuation by helicopter for a Turkish sailor who suffered a cardiac arrest. This was reported in a statement issued by the Algeria Ministry of National Defense on Thursday.

“In line with the humanitarian missions and efforts of the coast guard units under the Naval Forces Command—particularly those aimed at saving lives at sea—a request was received on September 18, 2024, at 11:50 AM from the National Center for Marine Surveillance and Rescue. This request originated from the Ankara Maritime Rescue Coordination Center and concerned the urgent medical evacuation of a 67-year-old Turkish sailor, a crew member of the Liberian-flagged commercial vessel SIFTRI, who experienced a cardiac arrest and was in critical condition,” the source detailed.

“Immediately, in coordination with the Regional Center for Marine Surveillance and Rescue Operations in Jijel, part of the 5th Military Region, the National Center activated a maritime medical evacuation operation utilizing an AS-12 search and rescue helicopter from the 560th Squadron,” the statement continued.

“After locating the vessel twenty-seven nautical miles north of Cap Rosa at Collo, the Turkish sailor was swiftly evacuated to El-Hadjar Hospital for initial care. He was subsequently transferred to Ibn-Rochd University Hospital in Annaba for further treatment,” the source noted.

This operation “is part of the humanitarian missions undertaken by the coast guard units of the Naval Forces Command, reflecting their dedication and commitment to intervening and saving lives at sea under all circumstances,” the statement concluded.
