Algeria Emerges as a Regional Maritime Hub, Aiming to Become Africa’s Gateway

ALGIERS – Algeria’s latest achievements in the maritime sector, particularly in port infrastructure and logistics, allowed it to become a regional maritime hub open to Africa, operators and experts highlighted on Monday in Algiers.

During the International Conference on Maritime Economy, participants noted that Algeria’s geographical location, along with public initiatives to revive the maritime economy, could grant the country the status of a transshipment hub to and from Africa.

“Algeria must be positioned as a leading gateway and hub for Africa in the maritime and port sector, meeting the expectations of national economic operators,” said Director of the World Trade Center Algiers, Ahmed Tibaoui, the organizer of this conference.

According to Tibaoui, Algeria’s extensive coastline and proximity to southern Europe, along with its location along one of the world’s busiest shipping routes, enable the country to “play an important role internationally in the maritime sector.”

The national road network, with its connection to the landlocked countries of the Sahel via the Trans-Saharan Highway (Algiers-Lagos), gives Algeria a distinct advantage for developing a transshipment hub to support its domestic trade and that of its southern neighbors—and even the northern Mediterranean coast.
