Algeria Commits to Training UN Mission Personnel for Enhanced Field Effectiveness (Mansouri)

Algeria has pledged to provide training for United Nations peacekeeping missions to improve their operational performance and enhance civilian protection, stated Bakhta Selma Mansouri, the Algerian Secretary of State to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in charge of African Affairs, during a conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

While addressing the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial, Mansouri emphasized Algeria’s commitment to delivering specialized training in four key areas to ensure that UN missions are “better prepared” and can offer more effective protection for civilians.

Firstly, she highlighted that “Algeria is dedicated to providing specialized training in humanitarian demining to assist communities affected by conflict and prepare personnel for peacekeeping missions operating in environments contaminated by explosives.” This training “will facilitate improved detection, clearance, and neutralization of landmines and unexploded ordnance,” she added.

Additionally, Algeria will offer forensic training with an emphasis on international humanitarian law, according to the Secretary of State. This initiative aims to enhance the ability of UN mission members to “document atrocities” committed during conflicts, particularly in situations involving mass violence, she noted.

The third area discussed by Mansouri concerns the protection of telecommunications systems within peace operations. “Algeria will provide training focused on securing telecommunications infrastructure utilized by peacekeeping missions,” she explained. This “initiative will equip peacekeeping personnel with the skills necessary to detect and counter cyber threats while maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of their communications systems,” she continued.

Moreover, Algeria will provide training in military medicine and emergency care “to enable peacekeeping personnel to effectively respond to medical emergencies in hostile environments,” she specified, noting that this training covers various aspects, including emergency evacuations, field care, and psychological first aid for conflict victims.

Mansouri further expressed that these commitments “reaffirm Algeria’s determination to invest in the credibility and future of collective peacekeeping efforts” on an international scale.
