Algeria calls for restraint in DRC and reaffirms support for mediation efforts

ALGIERS – Algeria on Saturday expressed “deep concern” over the escalating conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and called for restraint and the creation of conditions conducive to the resumption of dialogue and negotiations, while reaffirming its readiness to assist in the ongoing mediation efforts, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

“Algeria is closely monitoring the resumption and intensification of the conflict in the DRC with deep concern. We call for restraint and de-escalation to create favourable conditions for the responsible resumption of dialogue and negotiations aimed at restoring peace in the region,” the statement said.

Algeria reiterated its support for the outcomes of the extraordinary summits of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), both of which advocated for sincere and good-faith dialogue between all parties involved in the conflict, the source said.

The statement also underscored Algeria’s support for the efforts of the Presidents of Angola, João Lourenço, and Kenya, William Ruto, in their continued and determined mediation efforts between the conflicting parties, despite significant challenges.

In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had instructed the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs to reach out to the foreign ministers of the countries involved in the conflict, as well as those participating in mediation efforts. This initiative aims to affirm Algeria’s willingness to support ongoing mediation and contribute to restoring peace and stability to the DRC and the African Great Lakes region as a whole.
