Algeria Calls for Political and Peaceful Settlement to Ukraine War at UN Security Council

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf delivered a statement before the UN Security Council on the war in Ukraine, expressing deep regret that the conflict is entering its fourth year without any concrete prospects for resolution. He reaffirmed Algeria’s belief that dialogue and negotiation remain the only path capable of ending the war and preventing further escalation with dangerous consequences for regional and global stability.
Attaf emphasized that the war has brought devastating losses to Russia and Ukraine, thrown Europe into its most serious crisis since World War II, and destabilized the world through food, energy, and security repercussions. He underlined Algeria’s conviction that this war leaves all sides as losers, with no true beneficiaries, and that its global consequences demand urgent international action.
Recalling the initiative proposed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to offer Algeria’s good offices, Attaf stressed that diplomatic efforts must outweigh the momentum of military confrontation. He called for a settlement that is political and peaceful in approach and content, addresses the root causes of the conflict while ensuring the security concerns of both parties, and is firmly grounded in the principles of the UN Charter—principles that guarantee fairness, protection, and equality for all member states.
