A3+ Group Advocates National Dialogue at UN Security Council Meeting on Haiti

The A3+ Group at the Security Council, comprising Algeria, Somalia, Sierra Leone, and Guyana, urged on Wednesday in New York the establishment of a national dialogue to restore democratic governance in Haiti, emphasizing that strengthening judicial institutions and restoring the rule of law are crucial steps for securing lasting stability and peace.
“We emphasize the fundamental importance of establishing a dialogue led by and for the Haitian people in order to restore democratic governance,” stated Carolyn Rodrigues, Permanent Representative of Guyana, speaking on behalf of the group at a Security Council meeting dedicated to the situation in Haiti. Nevertheless, Carolyn Rodrigues noted that reports pain a “grim picture” of the security situation in Haiti, marked by concerns over the potential emergence of a deeper political crisis amid political transition delays.
The A3+ further emphasized that “strengthening judicial institutions in Haiti and restoring the rule of law are crucial steps toward lasting security and peace,” hence the need for further efforts to enforce the arms embargo provisions.
In this regard, they emphasized the need “to curb the flow of weapons and ammunition into Haiti to support stabilization efforts and halt violence.”
