Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison and will soon be incarcerated in connection with allegations of Libyan financing of his victorious 2007 presidential campaign, media reported.
The 70-year-old former head of state will be summoned within a month by prosecutors, who will set the date for his imprisonment. Any appeal will not suspend the measure.
Sarkozy has already been convicted in both first instance and appeal for illegal campaign financing, receiving a one-year sentence, including six months to be served under electronic monitoring.
He has lodged an appeal before the Court of Cassation, France’s highest judicial authority, in a separate case linked to overspending during his failed 2012 presidential campaign.
