Germany Stresses “Robust Security Guarantees” for Ukraine Ahead of Peace Talks with Trump

Germany on Monday reiterated the need for “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine as part of efforts to end the ongoing war with Russia. Deputy government spokesman Steffen Meyer said in Berlin that the aim is to achieve a “long-term and sustainable peace” in Ukraine, stressing that such guarantees are essential. He added that their design would be highly complex, involving both political and technical aspects requiring detailed discussions.

At the same time, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul refrained from committing to sending German troops to Ukraine as part of a potential European peacekeeping mission. Speaking during a visit to Tokyo, Wadephul noted that no agreement had yet been reached among European states on this matter, describing the situation as the “beginning of a difficult process.”

The developments come just days after US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a landmark summit in Anchorage, Alaska. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is expected in Washington later on Monday for talks with Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and other European leaders. Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said the discussions would cover peace efforts, security guarantees, territorial issues, and the continuation of sanctions against Russia to press Moscow toward a diplomatic settlement.
