Algeria Among Top Arab Countries in Social Protection

ALGIERS – The director of the group on gender justice, population and inclusive development at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Mehrinaz El Awady affirmed, Tuesday in Algiers, that Algeria was among the best Arab countries in terms of social protection, having a very successful experience intended to be generalized.
In a statement to the press on the sidelines of the 4th Arab Forum for Equality, which is being held at “Abdellatif Rahal” International Conference Center (CIC) in Algiers, El Awady underscored that “Algeria is among the top countries that have achieved significant progress in social protection, with a very successful experience that we are working to expand and share with other Arab nations.”
In this respect, the UN official emphasized the importance of consultation and coordination in the field of social protection, through the search for means capable of promoting social protection systems in a way that reflects “the political will and practical commitment to building more cohesive and equitable societies.”
For her part, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Rola Dashti, addressed, in her speech on this occasion, the challenges hindering the establishment of fair, inclusive and effective social protection, while noting that “the strength of a country is not measured only by its economic product and its infrastructure, but also by the capacity of its citizens to count on protection systems in times of need.”
