Museum Honoring Algerian Revolution Ally Enrico Mattei Designated as National Heritage Site in Italy

ALGIERS – The museum dedicated to Enrico Mattei (1906–1962), a staunch supporter of Algeria’s War of Liberation, has been officially designated a National Museum in Italy and added to the country’s cultural heritage registry.
The classification was announced by the Italian Ministry of Culture during a ceremony held in the town of Matelica, in the presence of Algeria’s ambassador to Italy, local officials, members of Mattei’s family, and numerous citizens. Enrico Mattei, former president of the Italian energy company ENI, was posthumously awarded the Medal of Friends of the Algerian Revolution by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in recognition of his unwavering support for Algeria’s struggle for independence.
Mattei’s legacy lives on not only through the museum but also through various landmarks named in his honor, including a garden in the Hydra district of Algiers and the Algeria-Italy gas pipeline bearing his name. Today, the Enrico Mattei Museum has become a historic and tourist destination attracting visitors from Italy, Europe, and beyond, further strengthening Algerian-Italian ties through symbols of the Revolution and shared historical memory.
