Algeria Inaugurates Restored Cherchell National Museum in Partnership with Germany

TIPASA – Algerian Minister of the Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, inaugurated on Monday the National Public Museum, in the province of Cherchell, following an extensive operation of rehabilitation and maintenance of its archeological remains in cooperation with the Federal Republic of Germany.
In his speech on the occasion, the minister, accompanied by Katja Keul, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, said that the cooperation between the two countries is “a model to follow in the field of cultural partnership, dating back to 1966—the year the first scientific and cultural cooperation agreement was signed between Algeria and Germany—before its renewal in 2022.”
“The diplomatic commitment between the two countries reflects a shared vision, convinced that culture is a bridge of communication and a tool to strengthen ties between peoples,” he added.
He also highlighted the “positive impact” of this collaboration on the Algerian team, which has benefited from Germany’s pioneering expertise in restoration and maintenance, noting that this partnership “has contributed to enhancing Algerian skills in preserving cultural heritage.”
Launched in 2008, the Cherchell National Public Museum restoration project, coordinated with the German Archaeological Institute, focused on restoring and conserving 169 archaeological pieces, including rare statues and sculptures. Additionally, the project modernized the exhibition system with a modern scenographic style while ensuring earthquake-resistant protection.
