EU Threatens Severe Measures Against X Over Rule Violations

The European Union has warned that it could fine, suspend, or even ban the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) if it fails to adhere to the bloc’s regulations, according to EU Commission Executive Vice-President Stephane Sejourne.
In an interview with France Inter, Sejourne highlighted that EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen had extended an investigation into Elon Musk’s platform last week to establish a legal foundation for potential action. Sejourne emphasized that if the platform does not comply, sanctions could reach billions of euros, and, ultimately, X could face a ban.
The EU’s concerns include recent debates, such as Musk’s political interference, especially his support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in advance of the German elections. Sejourne underscored the importance of maintaining strict compliance with the EU’s rules, noting that the legal proceedings would factor in these developments.
EU’s Defense Strategy Amid U.S. Shift Under Trump
As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, Sejourne addressed the evolving relationship between the U.S. and the EU. He acknowledged that while the U.S. remains an ally, its foreign policy under Trump is increasingly focused on defending American interests.
Sejourne urged European unity, particularly in bolstering European defense capabilities, as the U.S. shifts its focus toward the Pacific. He also warned that any inconsistency within Europe would be seen as a sign of weakness by the Trump administration, which has adopted a “language of force” in its global dealings.
