China Urges Enhanced Global Governance and Redress for Africa

Fu Cong, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, urged on Wednesday for increased efforts to improve global governance systems and address the historical injustices faced by African nations.
During a UN Security Council briefing focused on the cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union, Fu reflected on how African countries have emerged from colonial rule and attained national independence. He observed that their involvement has profoundly transformed the United Nations and expanded its universality.
However, he noted that the current international order continues to be shaped by unfair and unreasonable elements affecting African countries, with genuine equality in establishing rules, accessing opportunities, and sharing power still out of reach.
He highlighted that during last week’s general debate at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, African leaders called for expedited reforms of the global governance system to rectify the long-standing injustices endured by Africa. “China firmly supports Africa’s legitimate demands,” he asserted.
Fu emphasized China’s consistent advocacy for improved representation and a more powerful voice for developing countries, particularly African states, within the global governance framework. He expressed support for reforms in the international financial architecture to enhance multilateral financial institutions’ ability to assist Africa’s development.
“Regarding the reform of the Security Council, China advocates for special measures that prioritize Africa’s aspirations,” he declared.
Acknowledging that communication and cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union have strengthened over the years—symbolizing one of the most enduring, comprehensive, and fruitful partnerships—Fu proposed that moving forward, the UN and the AU should concentrate on four key areas: ending conflicts and violence in Africa to ensure common security; supporting African-led peacekeeping operations and fostering equitable cooperation; addressing the root causes of conflicts while promoting joint development; and improving global governance systems to remedy historical injustices against Africa.
The UN’s Agenda 2063 outlines Africa’s vision for modernization and the continent’s commitment to collaborate with the UN and other multilateral organizations to confront pressing challenges such as security, poverty, climate change, and development, the ambassador reported.
In conclusion, he reaffirmed that China will continue to actively support the United Nations and the Security Council in strengthening cooperation with the African Union and remains committed to advancing alongside Africa toward modernization.
