Guinea: Government Officially Declares Mpox Epidemic

The Guinean government officially announced on Wednesday the emergence of an Mpox epidemic in the country following the confirmation of a case in the Macenta region (southeast).

“In light of this situation and in accordance with the International Health Regulations (IHR), the Ministry of Health and Public Hygiene has declared an Mpox epidemic in the Macenta prefecture,”APS stated a press release.

To mitigate the spread of the disease, the ministry has developed a national preparedness and response plan and has reinforced surveillance throughout the country while offering public recommendations.

Emphasizing that the Mpox virus spreads through close contact with infected individuals, carrier animals, or contaminated objects, the government urged people to avoid physical contact with those who are sick, refrain from interacting with wild animals that are found dead or ill, and to wash their hands regularly with soap and water.
