USA : Tropical Storm Debby leaves incalculable damages as it creeps into the Southeast

Violent rain from the Storm Debby, killed at least five people, and about 500 were rescued on Monday. The flooding has damaged homes and businesses and caused power outages across the state of Georgia, leading to several fatalities.

Forecasters say that rain in the Southeast may reach up to 51 centimeters, while other areas will possibly total up to 76 centimeters, breaking then the 2018’s record of Hurricane Florence (58 centimeters).

The National Weather Service continued issuing tornado warnings till Monday night for parts of the state including the island town of Hilton Head.

President Joe Biden approved a request from South Carolina’s governor for an emergency declaration, aiming to speed up federal aid. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris postponed a campaign scheduled for Thursday in Savannah.

Debby made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on the Big Bend coast of Florida early Monday, first hitting the small community of Steinhatchee. Severe rain and flooding then pummeled northern Florida, the coastal regions of Georgia and South Carolina, as well as parts of North Carolina.
