Zionist Attack on Arak Heavy Water Reactor: Tehran Appeals to the Security Council

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the United Nations Security Council to enforce its Resolution 487 and uphold the global non-proliferation regime following the recent military aggression and bombing of Iran’s heavy water reactor in Arak.

“The Arak heavy water reactor, a facility fully safeguarded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and constructed strictly in accordance with the technical specifications outlined in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to eliminate any proliferation risk, was bombed in broad daylight on Thursday by the Zionist entity,” Araghchi stated in a message posted on social media Friday morning.

“As the Security Council convenes today, it is imperative that it upholds and enforces its Resolution 487, which was unanimously adopted in response to the 1981 attack by the Zionist entity against the Iraqi nuclear facility,” he emphasized.

He continued: “The language of this resolution is unequivocal: any military assault on nuclear facilities constitutes a violation of the entire IAEA safeguards regime and ultimately undermines the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). This principle applies not only to past actions but also to future conduct, establishing a clear legal standard against the use or threat of force against safeguarded nuclear installations.”

“If the Council fails to act, it will need to justify to the international community why its legal principles are applied selectively in such a critical matter. It will also bear ultimate responsibility, along with the Zionist entity, if the global non-proliferation regime were ever to collapse,” warned the Iranian Foreign Minister.

The Zionist entity initiated a series of aggressions against Iran on June 13, resulting in fatalities and injuries. In retaliation, Tehran launched missile and drone strikes targeting several Zionist positions as part of an operation named “Honest Promise 3.”
