Yemen : IOM Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Crisis for 20 Million People

As Yemen’s devastating conflict continues, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned on Wednesday that the suffering in the country “never stopped,” with nearly 20 million people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance to survive. The crisis has displaced more than 4.8 million people, many of whom are struggling in makeshift shelters with little access to food, health care, and basic protection.
According to the IOM, women and children face escalating threats, including violence, malnutrition, and worsening health conditions. Climate shocks, such as devastating floods and droughts, have compounded the already dire situation. “The war in Yemen has faded from global attention, but for those living through it, the suffering has never stopped,” IOM Director General Amy Pope emphasized, calling for urgent international intervention to prevent millions from being abandoned.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of migrants seeking transit through Yemen remain stranded in brutal conditions. In 2024 alone, nearly 60,900 migrants arrived in the war-torn country, many left without the means to survive. With critical aid programs facing severe funding shortages, including IOM’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return program, Pope warned that inaction would lead to more suffering, more deaths, and fading hope for the future.
