Yassaâ Unveils Algeria’s Hydrogen Strategy in Rotterdam

Noureddine Yassaâ, the Secretary of State to the Algerian Minister of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, in charge of Renewable Energies, presented Algeria’s vision and strategy for the development of its hydrogen sector at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He asserted that the country possesses the requisite assets to become a significant player in the global hydrogen market.

In his address at the summit’s opening on Tuesday, Yassaâ remarked, “Algeria places energy transition and sustainable development at the core of its economic policy, viewing these as fundamental pillars necessary for ensuring energy security, diversifying the national economy, and creating high-value jobs,” according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies.

“With its strategic geographic position, abundant natural resources, advanced infrastructure, and recognized expertise in the energy sector, Algeria is well-equipped to be a key player in the global hydrogen market and a reliable supplier of clean energy to Europe, mirroring its pioneering role in natural gas exports over the decades.”

Yassaâ also outlined “the six fundamental axes that underpin the national strategy for developing the hydrogen economy.” He referred to the four pilot projects launched by Algeria to test various applications of green hydrogen, along with a semi-industrial production project capable of generating 50 megawatts, marking a significant advancement toward large-scale production.

He highlighted the important international partnerships between Algeria and various global stakeholders, particularly the European Union (EU) and Germany through the “TaqatHy” and “taqatHy+” projects. Additionally, he discussed the “SoutH2 Corridor” project, which aims to connect Algeria with Tunisia, Italy, Austria, and Germany to export green hydrogen to Europe.

Algeria made a noteworthy appearance at this global event with a national pavilion that showcased its considerable potential in green hydrogen, ongoing projects, and available investment opportunities in renewable energies. The statement noted that the pavilion attracted a substantial number of visitors, including experts and representatives from international institutions and companies.

On the sidelines of the summit, Yassaâ held a bilateral meeting with the South African Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, during which both parties explored cooperation prospects in the fields of renewable energies and green hydrogen, agreeing to investigate opportunities for joint projects and mutual investment.

Mr. Yassaâ also met with the Director General of Hydrogen and the Circular Carbon Economy at the Saudi Ministry of Energy, discussing strategies to enhance collaboration in the production, storage, and transportation of green and blue hydrogen, emphasizing the exchange of expertise and the establishment of strategic partnerships in this promising field.
