Witkoff Praises ‘Significant Progress’ Made in Ukraine Negotiations

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has said that negotiations aimed at settling the Ukraine conflict have made substantial headway, stressing that talks are now focused on resolving a single remaining issue. “I think we’ve made a lot of progress,” Witkoff said, as quoted by Reuters, speaking on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. He described the current stage of negotiations as decisive, noting that discussions have narrowed down to what he characterized as a solvable problem.
According to Witkoff, the talks have gone through several iterations on the outstanding issue, indicating that both sides have engaged seriously with potential compromises. “I think we have got it down to one issue, and we have discussed iterations of that issue, and that means it is solvable,” he told the audience. He added that if all parties demonstrate the political will to reach an agreement, a resolution is achievable.
Witkoff also highlighted the economic dimension of a potential settlement, arguing that the creation of a tariff-free zone in Ukraine would be “game changing” for the country’s economy and could help accelerate recovery and integration into global trade. He is expected to travel to Moscow later on Thursday to continue discussions on the Ukraine settlement, underscoring Washington’s active diplomatic engagement in the process.
