Western Sahara Determines its Present and Future, Not France or Any Other Country (Diplomat)

Ambassador Sidi Mohamed Ammar, the representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), asserted that the present and future of Western Sahara are determined solely by the Sahrawi people, not by France or any other country.

This assertion was made during a press briefing at the United Nations on Tuesday, as reported by the Sahara Press Agency (SPS). The briefing addressed the contents of a letter sent by the French president to the Moroccan king, which claimed that “the present and future of Western Sahara” fall under the purported “Moroccan sovereignty.”

The Sahrawi diplomat emphasized that “the French position contradicts international law and France’s international responsibilities as a permanent member of the Security Council because it supports the illegal occupation of Western Sahara, which is a non-self-governing territory.”

“Neither France nor Morocco can break the will of the Sahrawi people, who will continue their struggle for independence by all legitimate means.” The Sahrawi diplomat underlined.

Ambassador Ammar concluded by stating that “by adopting this hostile stance towards the Sahrawi people, France has excluded itself from any involvement in international efforts to end colonialism in Western Sahara.”

The Polisario Front strongly condemned France’s recent support for the unjust Moroccan occupation, asserting that “France is no longer qualified to be part of the MINURSO mission due to its disgraced and biased stance in favor of the Moroccan claim.”

In a similar context, Algeria decided to withdraw its ambassador from France on Tuesday in response to France’s endorsement of an autonomy plan for Western Sahara as the sole solution to a longstanding dispute.

The Algerian government had affirmed that it would take all necessary measures and hold the French government fully accountable, as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad.

Algeria took similar measures against Madrid when Spain backed Morocco’s autonomy plan in 2022.
