Western Railway Line Completion: UIC Director General Commends Algeria’s Strategic Vision

The Director General of the International Union of Railways (UIC), François Davenne, praised on Wednesday the completion of the Bechar-Tindouf-Gara Djebilet railway line.

He noted that the project, which includes a dedicated passenger service, reflects the “deep strategic vision” of the Algerian authorities.

In a statement to Algerian Television, Davenne affirmed that “the completion of a project on the scale of the western railway line and the accompanying passenger service mirrors the profound, forward-looking vision of Algerian authorities.” He further pointed out that while several countries are known for advanced mining railways, the Algerian experience is distinguished by the “integration of mining exploitation and passenger transport,” describing this dual-purpose achievement as “unique.” Davenne also highlighted the significant economic benefits this project offers at the continental level, given Algeria’s vast natural resources.

He praised “Algeria’s focus on establishing advanced infrastructure and linking rail development to demographic growth and regional revitalization.” Furthermore, he stated that the UIC appreciates the work carried out by the National Agency for Railway Investment Studies and Implementation Monitoring (ANESRIF) in executing this project.

“What caught our attention in the completion of such major projects in Algeria is the great technical mastery of Algerian engineers and the high competence of Algerian institutions,” Davenne concluded.
