Warnings Over Morocco’s Ongoing “Hybrid Warfare” in Western Sahara

Political analysts have warned that Morocco continues its aggressive policies in Western Sahara through “hybrid warfare” involving military occupation, resource plundering, information manipulation and using illegal migration as leverage and blackmail to secure “political gains.” In an interview with the Spanish website Descifrando la Guerra about his new book “War of the Strait,” political analyst Alejandro Lopez confirmed that Morocco is pursuing aggressive policies in Western Sahara through “hybrid warfare” aimed to impose a fait accompli and impose its control over the region’s natural resources.

Lopez underlined that Morocco goes beyond military occupation, employing unconventional tactics including political and economic pressure, resource control, and information manipulation, such as leaking official documents and shaping public narratives to serve its strategic goals through deceptive methods that violate international law.

According to Lopez, these devious practices entrench a status quo at the expense of Sahrawi rights, without providing any political solutions or respecting international legitimacy.

Another article titled “When media enables the cover-up of Morocco’s occupation of Western Sahara,” published on the “Don’t Forget Western Sahara” website, emphasized that the Sahrawi issue remains an ongoing matter marked by persistent human rights violations and the imposition of occupation on local populations.

The article said that any attempt to reduce this legal and political issue to a mere side debate only serves to entrench the status quo on the ground.

The article added that perpetuating the occupation while ignoring the fundamental rights of local inhabitants constitutes a clear violation of international law and reinforces daily abuses against civilians.

Defending the Sahrawi cause, it argued, requires an objective stance that prioritizes human rights and legal sovereignty in any discussion.
